The Locked Door
The Locked Door One night, the past catches up with her. She is at Christopher’s, a discreet bar where no one bothers her. Until that night.
—Everything okay, Doc? —asks the new bartender.
Nora, annoyed by his insistence, barely responds. But then someone else interrupts her. A patient. Henry Callahan. He recognizes her, praises her for saving his life... and doesn’t leave. He buys her a drink. He makes her uncomfortable. And when Nora tries to leave, he offers to walk her out. She declines. He insists.
—Come on, Doctor Davis… Nora. A beautiful woman like you shouldn’t be alone in a bar.
—I’m fine, thank you very much.
—Think about it. You’d have a good time with me.
—I doubt it.
Callahan leaves, but doesn’t disappear. When Nora drives home, a car follows her. She escapes into the local police station, but her unease doesn’t subside. And when she’s in her kitchen, a door bangs. She runs. Opens it. It’s not a killer. It’s a stray cat looking for food.
But the chill remains.
On her desk, a new letter from her father. She looks at it. Tears it up. “Happy anniversary, Dad.”
